Artist Florentijn Hofman: A passionate coach for the general public

The art works by Florentijn Hofman are easy to recognize by the distinctive use of image, colour and measurements. Hofman creates, generally by assignment, clear works for the public space, always with his public in mind. The scale of his work, and the simple images, bring his messages clearly across.
By using everyday icons of (single-use)culture he creates sculptures which appear very obvious. Powerful work which seems simple, but actually only comes about after careful research and consultation with people concerned. As a passionate coach Hofman points the general public to the possibilities of using your fantasy.

On the schoolyard of the primary school Het Spectrum in the Schilderswijk, The Hague, Hofman recently placed 2 trees with lifelike treehouses of ca. 4 meters high. At the festive presentation of the art work it was received by all pupils with great cheers. From the class rooms they have a clear view on the detailed, atypical tree houses and their promise, in mind, of escaping school. In 2007, Hofman has developed Zirkus Zeppelin. Round the construction of the motorway N470, Hofman invited people involved in N470 to look again at the surroundings. By means of a well-constructed 'campaign' residents, politicians and students got a chance to fly with a zeppelin over the area. This way they could distance themselves from the motorway and the long-term process (the circus) that surrounds the construction.
In the same year Hofman had a 26 meters high, lifelike, inflatable bath duck floating around on the river Loire in France. The friendly bath duck is directly recognizable for everyone and aims to remove (global) tensions. Seen earlier in Sao Paolo and now on show in Hasselt, Belgium and Osaka, Japan.

In the summer of 2005, right after Hofman became well-known with the piece ' Beukelsblauw' - a kobaltblue painted block of housing in Rotterdam - he had his first solo exhibition 'En vacance' in West. Now West is proud that Hofman shows his work for the second time in the gallery. For the solo exhibition 'Dushi' he has made new work for which he has taken his own surroundings as a focal point. The toys of his children inspired the gentle (cuddle)sculptures, while their scale completely changes their function. The homely surroundings of the gallery reinforce the sensitive work. In the backrooms a 'site-specific' video installation will be shown. In the exhibition Dushi Hofman shows a, possibly personal, view on paternity without becoming 'soppy'. We are happy to invite you for the opening.

Extra: wednesday 1st july 2009 – 20.00 h.
