Artist talk Elisa Caldana + discussion with Jol Thoms, Bruno Alves de Almeida, Gabriel Alonso & Dr. Fahim Amir
We are happy to invite you to an afternoon of insightful conversations, starting with an artist's talk by Elisa Caldana. This will be followed by brief lectures by philosopher Dr. Fahim Amir and artist Gabriel Alonso, who will explore the intricate relationship between nature and culture. These presentations will segue into a conversation with Jol Thoms, an artist and researcher at Goldsmiths. The discussion, moderated by Bruno Alves de Almeida, curator and resident liaison of the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, will use Caldana's work as a starting point.
The event aims to delve into Caldana's research process in Pakistan and the broader artistic and scholarly endeavors within the realm of art and ecology. Elisa Caldana's solo exhibition, ‘The Falcon of Karachi’ introduces a new series of works, unveiled for the first time to both national and international audiences in a unique installation setting tailored for the spaces of West. This project, part of a broader inquiry into the relationship between wildlife and domesticity, challenges collective memory and invites reevaluation of culturally produced wildlife, exploring the paradoxical processes of developing wilderness within captivity.
On the other side of the conversation the artist and researcher Jol Thoms offers a unique perspective shaped by his interdisciplinary approach to art and ecology. Thoms' innovative work traverses boundaries between human and non-human worlds, inviting audiences to contemplate our interconnectedness with nature, technology, and the cosmos. With projects like the Ocean sound art ritual Radio Amnion and recent participations in international exhibitions, Thoms exemplifies a commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and ecological discourse.
Together, Caldana and Thoms will exchange ideas, touching upon themes of environmental stewardship, artistic innovation, and the transformative power of interdisciplinary dialogue. Join us for a Sunday afternoon of thought-provoking conversation and exploration into the intersections of art, ecology, and beyond.
Elisa Caldana (Italy) lives and works in The Hague. She graduated from Städelschule, Frankfurt, and IUAV University of Venice. Her work was exhibited internationally, including at the MAXXI Museum, Rome, 2023; Italian Cultural Institute, Mexico City, 2022; MAMbo Museum, Bologna, 2021; Whitechapel Gallery, London, 2020; ROZENSTRAAT, Amsterdam, 2020; Tokyo Arts and Space, Tokyo, 2019; ar/ge Kunst, Bozen, 2017; Sandretto Foundation, Turin, 2016. She is an alumna of Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht (2020-2021), recipient of the Italian Council – XII edition (2023) and VII edition (2019), nctm e l’arte (2018), Hessische Kulturstiftung (2016-2017). Her recent publications include Times of Crisis, MAMbo Editions, 2021, and Never Again, Mousse Publishing, 2020. Her works entered the permanent collections: MACTE Museum of Contemporary Art in Termoli, MAMbo Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Art, Rome, and Städelschule Portikus e.V.
Bruno Alves de Almeida (Brazil/Portugal) is a curator based in the Netherlands, currently artistic director and co-curator of the Luleå Biennial 2024, in Sweden, and curator and resident liaison of the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, Netherlands. Bruno is an alumnus of the De Appel Curatorial Programme, Amsterdam, and has collaborated internationally with institutions such as TATE (UK), Harvard Graduate School of Design, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Independent Curators International (USA), PACT Zollverein (Germany), 11th São Paulo Architecture Biennial, Pivô Art and Research (Brazil), among others.
Jol Thoms (Toronto) is an artist, sound designer, and researcher based in London UK where he is Studio Lecturer on the MA Art & Ecology at Goldsmiths. His critical practice addresses our troubled relationships with nature, technology, and the cosmos by signalling beyond the purely measurable and quantifiable, and by thinking, feeling, and sensing with more-than-human worlds. His work crosses and reconfigures boundaries between the non/human, cosmological, and the scientific using strategies from quantum field theory, experimental audio-visual arts, environmental humanities, and feminist anti-colonial science studies. Thoms initiated the Ocean sound art ritual Radio Amnion: Sonic Transmissions of Care in Oceanic Space in 2020, relaying artists compositions 2.5kms deep in – and addressed to – the Pacific Ocean during each full moon. He has recently participated in Postscript of Silence –Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai; Ocean Evening – Ocean Space, Venice Biennale; The Measure of the World – RADIUS Centre for Contemporary Art and Ecology, Delft; Unknown Unknowns: An Introduction to Mysteries – 23rd International Triennale Milano; Biota Biomes and Bodies – Coventry Biennial, UK.
Gabriel Alonso (Spain) is a visual artist. In 2020, he established the Institute for Postnatural Studies, a platform dedicated to rethinking artistic practice through the lenses of political ecology, postnatural aesthetics, and new ethical frameworks for creation.
Dr. Fahim Amir lives in Vienna. He is a philosopher and cultural scientist, working at the intersections of nature, cultures and colonial historicities, transcultural agency and urbanism.
