A map, a wall, wallpaper, a window, a bookcase, a cellar, a lamp, a frame and construction material.
The main point of this exhibition is structure. But nothing is what it seems. Everything has been well thought-out, turned inside-out, changed, broken and repaired. Even when the chosen technique is similar, the references and points of view are very different.
This exhibition finds connections between the work of these ten artists who all belong to the same generation. The connection can be found in the critical, humoristic look on (plastic) consumer-society. As contemporary artists they continue to work in the tradition of the Deconstruction. With trickery, elements from films, aspects of the waste-economy and the improper use of material Baghriche, Boudvin, Clainchard, Denicolaï & Provoost, Dionne, Ganivet, Laumann, Milhé and Pradeau examine the deconstruction of logic. In each work one (apparently) finds antagonisms and contradictions, while the deconstruction shows how strongly these terms are interwoven. The exhibition in West forms a small cosmos based on particles of surroundings and (non)logical elements.

Fayçal Baghriche (1972) want to make the world 'more beautiful'. Not without irony he looks at art with a critical eye. He uses several techniques in the form of film and installations to create his interventions. In Galerie West Baghriche shows spatial work in the form of wallpaper and - never shown before- an endless video entitled ' Révolutions' concerning The Louvre, people, art and architecture.
Simon Boudvin (1979) shows infestations of the urban landscape and urbanisation in installations and foto's. Boudvin showcases reality in a series entitled 'Concave', which, at the same time, forms an architectural project. The acquired (stone) material leaves spaces behind which are confiscated by Boudvin. The foto's have been made with great care and are in essence assemblies of reality.
Matthieu Clainchard (1973) shows work which visualises the term inadequacy, shows contingency and shifts reality. He brings that about by modifying the context drastically. In West he escapes logic by using (stunt)film techniques to confuse the onlookers.
The art production of Simona Denicolaï (1972) & Ivo Provoost (1974) is an attempt to withdraw art from each form of unworldly context in which it no longer gives feedback at powers of the economic and social reality in society. Not accidentally, the earthworm which `swallow its context, digests it and passes it on to survive and evolve…' is the everpresent logo within their artistic credo.
Marcel Dionne shows a 'ready made', a small work of which you will develop some doubts as to the set-up of the exhibition. You can consider it as a nihilistic or ironical work but in fact it is a contemporary work in the spirit of Duchamp.
Vincent Ganivet (1976) is a sculptor who works with base material from construction-sites. His rudimentary work is, in spite of the use of concrete block-systems, wood, water and iron, particularly aesthetic and subtle. Gavinets sculptures are not static, they can cause calamities as he works with dynamite and water. Onlookers are requested to keep their distance. For West he makes a new 'site-specific' work.
Lars Laumann (1977) shows an adapted part of the film ' Top Secret' by Jim Abrahams, David & Jerry Zucker which originally was shot backwards. Laumann shows this scene forwards and backwards, the result of which will leave the onlookers in a mental maze trying to understand it.
Nicolas Milhé (1976) has been specialising in the aesthetics of disturbances. The onlooker will be disoriented by his inversions and changes of context. They result in spatial pictures with an idealistic look on the world. An seperate part of one conrete wall, 6 meters high, on a small square in Rennes, France. A Jeep Cherokee completely camouflaged with a leather cover with fringes and a map where the west coast has been situated in the east. His work in the public space makes direct contact with the people using recognizable icons. Milhé is not an 'inventor', he is an artist that transfoms the minds of the bypassers.
Fred Pradeau (1970) disturbs our opinion concerning sociological subjects by looking for the paradox. Pradeau distilled Coca-Cola into an alcoholic beverage, organised fightgames in an art gallery and translated texts of the marquis De Sade in Arab. His ideas are contemporary interventions which makes us use our minds.

We want to invite you and your friends for the opening on Saturday 7 June at 16:00 o'clock.
On Sunday 8 June at 20:00 o'clock we host an 'artist talk', at which Fayçal Baghriche, Simon Boudvin, Matthieu Clainchard, Simona Denicolaï & Ivo Provoost  and Vincent Ganivet will talk about their work.

Kind regards, Marie-José Sondeijker
