During the exhibition ‘The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project – Domestication’ by the Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen, West is organizing a talk on the evening of Thursday, November 18th 2010 with Koen Vanmechelen, Roel Arkesteijn, Sjoerd Repping and Ruud Kaulingfreks about the topics in the work of Vanmechelen. The talk will be headed by Marie-Jeanne de Rooij and held in Dutch.

Roel Arkesteijn has been curator of contemporary art at museum Het Domein in Sittard since 2008. He is familiar with the work of Vanmechelen from the exhibition Cosmopolitan Chicken Project – Mechelse Owlbeard amongst others that he curated for GEM, Den Haag. Prof. dr. Sjoerd Repping is associate professor in the field of human reproductive biology and head of the fertility laboratory of the AMC. Dr. Ruud Kaulingfreks studied sociology and philosophy in the Netherlands and Chile. He teaches organization development at the University of Humanities in Utrecht and publishes articles on art, philosophy and organization theory. Marie-Jeanne de Rooij is the director of WBK Vrije Academie/Gemak in Den Haag. Artist Koen Vanmechelen is crossbreeding chicken with the aim of breeding a cosmopolitan bastard chicken. He is searching for authentic chicken types in all countries around the world and mixing their genetics in an endless process. Is he delivering the ultimate pleading for a multicultural society or is he provoking the end of an individual cultural identity? And what roll does nationality play in contemporary art? Vanmechelen is crossbreeding chicken from all around the world in an old-fashioned manner to bring together individual features in one ultimate cosmopolitan chicken. In times of cloning, stem cell research and IVF, Vanmechelen’s efforts to manipulate evolution almost seem naive. In what way is the work of Vanmechelen connected to human reproductive biology? Is the chicken from a scientific point of view a serious metaphor for the human being and where will manipulative developments lead to in the future? For Koen Vanmechelen the chicken is symbolic for mankind. With The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project he is creating a parallel society reflecting on our own species and culture. The chicken is loved all around the world, easy to keep and accepted by all ethnic groups. That does however not apply to individuals in our contemporary society. Politics, religion, science and media have substantial influence on our behavior and make society very complex, comparable to an animal race that has been crossbred endlessly. We ask whether the chicken may be the better ‘human’.
